The bond between the baby and the mother begins the moment the fetus is formed in the womb, but the actual incredible magic of mother and child time begins with breastfeeding. One of the toughest jobs is breast feeding for new mothers. As wonderful and simple it may sound, it is not that easy initially. A for new moms it can be a cause for her anxiety. I would thus like to share the stages of difficulty that new mothers undergo while breastfeeding and certain tips that might help you get through with it.
The Beginning – latching
Once the child comes to this world after a few hours Itself the nurses and the lactation experts would advice the mother to start her breastfeeding for the baby. The initial three days milk contains colostrum that is the epitome of protein and the best nutrition that one can provide to the new born. But the issue here arises with the latching. If there if faulty latching in the beginning itself the baby wouldn’t be comfortable with the whole process. This usually makes the mother nervous and start questioning herself what went wrong. Here, in this situation you should take the advice of your lactation experts, they have tones of experience in this field and they would be of great help to you. Trust me I have been through the same. Taking help from experienced mom is the best advice to handle breast feeding for new mothers.
Knowing the exact position to provide comfort
Some information might be quite overwhelming, the head shouldn’t be quite low it might gah the baby. The position of the baby should be exactly right to match the height of the mother’s breast but not far away that he wouldn’t be able to latch. Also the mother shouldn’t be bending ahead a lot or else it might hurt her back quite a lot. So under such circumstances practise is the key , once the latch is correct and the baby is happy you will start getting the ring of it. Always use a nursing pillow or at-least a normal pillow while doing so helps with the posture of yourself and the baby. This technique of breast feeding for new mothers has proved to be helpful for many new moms I know personally.
Pain of breastfeeding sets in
Once you have aced the technique of latching and the baby starts breastfeeding every two hours the pain in the nipple and the breasts set in. Some time it might be so excruciating that you feel your nipple might rip off, especially night times when the baby’s hunger hormones are at a surge they feel the need to feed more and thus make your nipples go dancing in pain. At this level you can take a simple pain killer like paracetamol before you start your feed at-least a couple of hours before. But it is advisable only if the pain is too much, and you are struggling a lot. Other option being cold compression, over the nipple and around your breast, this too works like a charm. And after a few weeks your body will adapt and the pain will disappear as if it was never there.
Baby gets bigger
Once the baby gets above four or five months he begins to get lot mischievous. The breastfeeding for new mothers becomes like a nightmare and it is challenging to feed the baby. He will start to pull on the nipple to listen to sounds going around him, or start biting on the nipple between his gums. Some kids even scratch their mother while nursing. Some pull on to their mother’s hair and the list goes on. Thus leaving the new mother struggling while breastfeeding. If you going through the same, set an atmosphere around while you take your baby for breastfeeding. Choose a calm n quite room with slow music or rhythm in the background with no one around you two to disturb. This will help build a habit and the baby would know it’s time for his breastfeeding and he would be comfortable.
Breastfeeding In public
Struggling to breastfeed in public places when you are out with your baby is always the top of the list. The people’s awkward reactions and you feeling guilty because of them as if you were about to commit a crime. But remember ladies it’s the most natural thing on earth. And you need not worry about anyone. The person who is starring now was once also breastfed by his mother. If she would have not acknowledged his need then he wouldn’t be a grown man today. So relax and get your baby.
Lastly, babies feel the most secure with their mother one of the several reasons is breastfeeding. The struggle might be true but the outcome is always good. So happy parenting folks!!!
